While we can’t magic up a few extra metres here and there, we can create products that make the most of every home. Look no further than the new GLAMBERGET series: a curated range of furniture that combines space-saving multi-function with simple, honest design.

When conceptualising a series that would combine typically Scandinavian qualities with the graceful woodwork and functionality of Japanese design, pine felt like the natural choice for IKEA designer Mikael Axelsson. Looking at all the remarkable qualities of pine, and wood in general, it's no surprise why. This is a material known for its strength, versatility and time-enduring beauty – qualities all celebrated in each piece of the GLAMBERGET series. Let's take a closer look.

The bed

A twin bed, a day bed, a double bed. The GLAMBERGET extendable bed does it all! When it comes to designing a bed frame that extends, sturdy construction is one of the key considerations. “There were so many design iterations,” says Mikael. “We wanted to make something that was just as comfortable and durable extended as it was in its compact form.” There’s another charming design feature tucked underneath. When wheeled out, the under-bed storage can double as a bedside table – there when you need it and wheeled away when you don’t.

The wardrobe

Clothing storage can be a challenge when living in a small space. Typically, wardrobes live against a wall and can feel oppressive when room is limited. “With the wardrobe, we wanted to create a piece that was just as happy in the middle of the room as it would be against a wall,” says Mikael. “You can open it from both sides, or you can keep the doors open to create a see-through, airy effect.” Making the wardrobe accessible from either side means it can double as a room divider, splitting a space into different zones for different activities. Mikael and the rest of the team wanted to find an expression that celebrated the construction of each piece – highlighting rather than hiding the connections and construction. The ‘hooks’ on either side of the wardrobe are a perfect example of just that! 

The room divider

When looking to create a little privacy or a room within a room, few things compare to the flexibility and simplicity of a well-designed room divider – something sturdy yet lightweight. A lot of time was spent on the third member of the GLAMBERGET series; working out how to make it the most functional, while keeping the design simple and elegant. The feet rotate unobtrusively for added stability in different positions. And, as it is constructed from just three panels and four poles, the design remains light enough to use with ease, while made from solid pine.
