A research by DECO PROteste made for IKEA in December 2023 shows that a Portuguese household of three can save more than €600 a year by using products that make it possible to save energy and water, avoid food waste and cut down on the use of disposables.

How to save energy at home

Energy is usually a major expense for every household. Fortunately, there are simple things you can do to use energy more efficiently.

You can save €148 per year on energy by using more efficient equipment, such as light bulbs, hobs and ovens, and using appropriate textiles for better insulation and comfort.

This reduction in power consumption corresponds to a reduction in CO2 emissions of 111 kg per year.

How to save water at home

Drinking water is a scarce resource in many places. By using some household products and changing some habits, you can reduce your water consumption.

You can save €213 per year on water by using more efficient equipment, such as taps, shower heads and dishwashers, allowing you to save 160,100 litres of water per year.

How to use less and reuse more

There’s often a reusable alternative for lots of disposable products. And this alternative can also be more economical and generate less waste.

You can save €219 per year by avoiding disposables and choosing reusable alternatives for shopping bags and water bottles. At the end of the year, 14.4kg of plastic waste will have been avoided.

How to manage waste at home

A certain amount of waste is simply a fact of life. In Portugal, 124kg of food per person is wasted in a home, with around 6% of this waste being due to poor food storage.

You can save €32 per year by storing food in appropriate containers and places, which makes it possible to avoid a significant waste of food, around 23kg per year.
