Spring mattresses

Spring mattresses distribute body weight evenly over the entire mattress and eliminate pressure concentration in any part of the body. The open spring construction allows air to circulate through the mattress so it doesn't get too hot while you sleep.

Spring mattresses are available in this firmness:

What firmness should you choose?

It all depends on the sleeping position. On your back or on your side, we recommend a firm or extra firm mattress. If you sleep on your stomach, a medium firm mattress.

In a shared bed, where there is no agreement on firmness, choose for two different mattresses. On top, a mattress topper to give the feeling of a double bed.

Foam mattresses

Soft and flexible, foam mattresses provide support by adapting to the contours of your body and distributing your weight evenly. As no pressure is placed on any part of your body, blood flows freely, helping you to fully relax.

Foam mattresses are available in this firmness:

Is it fair to say that choosing a mattress is one of the most important decisions you can make in life? We certainly think so. The fact is that a good night’s sleep is the key to well-being. We sleep for one-third of our lives, which also means we spend roughly one-third of our life on different kinds of mattresses. Needless to say – a mattress matters! Everyone sleeps a little differently. Understanding the different mattress types will help you choose one which suits your sleep perfectly.

Mattress types

At IKEA, mattress selection has never been easier. You'll find the most popular mattress types and toppers for your sleeping style, size, and comfort preferences. Do you prefer a broad and firm mattress that feels great to stretch out on, or a soft mattress that you can sink into like a dream? One mattress feels like sleeping on a field beneath the stars, another feels like resting on a cloud. The point being – everyone prefers a different kind of mattress.

Choosing a mattress requires you to consider the softness or firmness you prefer, but also what size feels most comfortable, and whether there’s a particular material that helps you sleep well. If you find yourself often waking up with aches or pains, chances are you need a different kind of mattress entirely.

Foam and latex mattresses

Foam and latex mattresses mould to the shape of your body and distribute your weight evenly. These mattresses provide support for your whole body without putting extra pressure on any specific body parts. They are also silent (no creaky springs!) and absorb the shock of movement. This makes foam and latex mattresses a great choice if you have a partner who tosses and turns in their sleep.

Spring mattresses

Our spring mattresses also distribute your weight evenly, so that there’s no extra pressure on any part of your body. A key difference to the foam and latex mattresses, however, is that the open spring construction helps air flow through the mattress. This supports the ventilation in the mattress and can help you keep cool while you sleep. For some, it may give the mattress a fresher, airier feeling.

Mattresses in different sizes

You won’t have any trouble finding a mattress in a size that perfectly fits your sleeping quarter, whether it’s an enormous master bedroom or a small and cosy space. See below the most common mattress size dimensions:

  • Single mattresses– normally 90x200 cm
  • Double mattresses – normally 135x190 cm or 135x195 cm
  • King size mattresses – normally 150x200 cm
