IKEA Sleep Report 2025
Sleep uncovered
We spend about a third of our lives asleep, but how is the world sleeping nowadays? The newly launched IKEA Sleep Report, one of the most extensive surveys on sleep behaviours around the globe, takes a look behind closed eyes and reveals many surprising insights.
24 minutes
This is the average time it takes for people to fall asleep. But what's the secret to speedier slumbering? Having the right routines, rituals and surroundings can go a long way – as does steering clear of your phone in the run-up to bedtime.
1 hr 20 minutes
Globally, this is the gap between how much sleep we want and how much sleep we’re actually getting. People in certain parts of the world fare better than others, but Mainland China is the only place covered in the report with a regular average of over 7 hours of sleep a night.
72%
Do you share your bed with a brightly lit rectangle? Then you’re part of the 72% of people who use their phone in the bedroom. Wellness experts are quick to remind us to ditch the phone before bed and leave it in another room for a restful night’s sleep. Easier said than done, we know! Interestingly, despite phones having built-in alarms, 1 in 4 of us still use an alarm clock.
59 vs 67
This is the difference in average sleep scores between lower and higher-income earners – a worrying number that shows more money tends to go hand-in-hand with better sleep. According the IKEA Sleep Report findings, people who are financially insecure tend to wake up more often and have higher frequencies of bad dreams.
“Sleep is fascinating, and despite us all experiencing it every day, it is different for each one of us. Sleep is so much more than rest. For me, it’s a mirror for your overall health.”

The IKEA Sleep Score
This a system we developed for the Sleep Report to better understand how our respondents are (or aren’t) sleeping.
The IKEA Sleep Score provides a single, reliable measure of sleep quality ranging from 0 to 100, calculated as the sum of five factors (each scored from 0 to 20). It allows for standardised comparisons across different markets and groups by focusing on key aspects of the sleep experience. We found that the global average Sleep Score is 63 out of 100, indicating that most of us have room to improve on how we snooze.
So which IKEA markets are sleeping the most soundly? Taking the podium positions are Egypt, placing third with 70, followed by Indonesia in second place with 71. Leading the board is Mainland China, scoring 74. Curious about the rest of the world? You'll find the complete list of rankings in the full report.
All power to the power nap!
If you’re a fan of napping, you’re not alone. 65% of people take naps with 33 minutes being the average nap length. Unsurprisingly, parents of children under 18 make up 68% of the napping population, whilst those who work from home some of the week are also more likely to catch a snooze than those who do in-person work. “A 20-minute nap can boost recovery without disrupting nighttime sleep,” says Dr Christian Benedict. “But avoid napping too long, as it may cause sleep inertia. Even just resting for 20 minutes can be beneficial. There’s no pressure to fall asleep.”
Take your position
When conducting our research, we were interested to know how sleeping solo or in pairs might affect one’s sleeping position and sleep score. While sleeping on one’s side with legs tucked is the most favoured position of solo sleepers at 39%, 44% of couples report having no pattern at all! Also interesting – and possibly surprising – to learn is that having a sleep partner leads to better sleep! Those who share a bed had a higher sleep score than solo sleepers (65 vs 61).

Studying sleep has taught us a lot about just how many factors impact and impede our sleep. There is no denying the crucial role sleep plays in leading a healthy life and while there is no one-size-fits-all fix, small changes can help improve sleep. We believe in the power of a good night’s rest for a better life, and we're dedicated to creating a wide range of solutions that work for the many across the globe. Let’s celebrate and prioritise rest in every way possible!
